The History

The Magdala pub in Hampstead has a fascinating history that captures attention due to its association with a notorious event. In 1955, Ruth Ellis – the last woman to be hanged in Britain – murdered her lover David Blakely. Ruth Ellis’ execution raised a great public discussion on women in the crime passional, her childhood involved physically and sexually abusive and political pressure on evidence found and represented. Although Ruth Ellis’ case was revisited by the Court of Appeal in 2003 and a petition was submitted in 2007, requesting then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown to reconsider and grant her a pardon, these efforts did not result in a reversal of her conviction.

However, Ruth Ellis’ case was retold by varied TV, film and play, including ITV drama series – Lady Killers (1980), the movie – Dance with a Stranger (1985), the film – Pierrepoint (2006), the stage play – Follow Me (2007) and play – The Thrill of Love (2013). These forms of media have kept her story alive in popular culture.

Business Transformation

From 11^th February 2016, the Magdala pub closed its doors. However, thanks to the local community’s support, the pub was awarded Asset of Community Value (ACV) status in an effort to prevent its conversion into flats. In 2021 July, it is back in business. 

While promoting the pub’s association with a historic crime might pose challenges in terms of attracting visitors, there could be potential for film tourism and engaging the local community to enhance its marketing efforts.
