“I have been travelling since I was just four months old. My father worked in a rail infrastructure company during the rapid industrial development in China. His job took him to many different cities, and each weekend, my mother and I would take train to visit him. I can still remember the old green train and the ticket officer walking through the sleeping carriages, changing tickets one by one.
Sometimes our journey would take over 19 hours. It gives me plenty of time to observe people, each with their own stories, destinations, and lives. These early experiences inspired me with people, culture and places. Looking back, maybe that is where my love for cultural heritage and travel began, a journey that has become my own understanding of cultural tourism!”
Dr. Rui Su is a Senior Lecturer in Culture and Tourism at Middlesex University London. She has research interests in cultural heritage, tourist psychology, museology, war memory and urbanisation. She has also led several research and knowledge exchange grants from The British Academy, The British Council, AHRC and Middlesex University. Projects include ‘Taste of Memory’ (The London Archives), ‘London Visitor Economy Recovery’, ‘Visitor Emotional Engagement’ (National Trust), ‘Church Action on Poverty’ and ‘Storytelling Festival’.
